Academics
Our teachers challenge students with a rigorous academic program that promotes their growth as scholars and innovators. Classes are small and range in size from 8 to 18, depending on the subject.
We cultivate intellect and nurture creativity.
Our core program includes:
Humanities combines a study of American and World history, modern civics, extensive fiction and non-fiction reading and expository and creative writing. A love of reading is also fostered throughout the day with time for independent reading and library periods, in which students can choose from one of our thousands of volumes of middle and high school-aged selections in the Cat MacRae Library. Extensive writing, discussion and debate are fostered in our small classes, and students master necessary content to prepare them for high school-level demands.
Sixth and seventh grade math reinforce concepts and skills in ratios and proportions, number expressions, geometry, and statistics and probability. In eighth grade, students tackle algebra, typically a high school-level course.
Students gain a firm grounding in biology, chemistry, and physics over their three years at GJA. Science utilizes classroom learning and hands-on labs to practice concepts.
Students study Spanish as a foreign language, preparing them to begin high school in level 2 or 3.
Students study visual arts multiple times a week in our Herbert Kasper Art Studio and explore drawing, collage, painting, and sculpture techniques while also learning about historical and contemporary artists. GJA also enjoys a partnership with the Whitney Museum which includes multiple visits to the museum each year and a museum educator who works with the class throughout the year. In music, students work with Julliard teachers and working musicians to learn music theory, percussion and choral singing.
In addition to stand-alone classes, technology is integrated into classroom subjects including visual arts, Spanish, science and humanities. Students learn coding, robotics and basic technology skills, and utilize tools like merge cubes for virtual reality learning across subject areas. All students are able to use a school laptop if needed.
We know an important part of learning is moving. In addition to recess time at Tompkins Square Park each day, students also have several periods of PE each week that includes fencing, martial arts, and yoga.
SummerAcademy serves as a vital bridge between academic years, helping students maintain and strengthen the skills they've developed. For students new to GJA, the program facilitates a seamless transition by providing opportunities to meet future classmates, practice daily commutes, and familiarize themselves with school expectations.
Educational research demonstrates that students typically experience academic regression during extended breaks from structured learning. Summer Academy counters this trend by offering targeted support that enables students to preserve and enhance their knowledge base. By fostering a sense of belonging and confidence within the school community, the program ensures all students begin the new academic year positioned for success.
